Histo-Game: Metroid

First released to the American audiences in August 1987, Metroid was lauded by both fans and critics for being one of the first games to not only offer both free-roaming opened environments, but also for it’s revelation that Samus Aran, the main protagonist of the series, was female.

Metroid was also one of the first games to explore various endings, 5 in total, depending on how fast the game was played, which was a design never before implemented, or even attempted at, until then.

Metroid was also one of the first games to offer up a password save system, still a new trend with the industry at the time, that allowed players to write down a 24-letter code word that could be re-entered when they wished to continue a previous game session. Various codes also became in-game cheats that, once entered, altered Samus’ look and/or granted special perks such as infinite health and power-up items and alternate firing modes for certain weapons.

The series has also been praised for its audio, which has been described as both atmospheric and dark, which original composer Hirokazu Tanaka admitted borrowed heavily from the dark and rhythmic sounds and musical accompaniments from the Alien movie franchise.

The series made it’s 3D debut on the Nintendo GameCube on November 17, 2002 and became the first in the series to go from third to first-person perspective, a decision that initially led to fan backlash and skepticism. However upon release, Metroid Prime quickly sold more than 1 million units in the U.S. alone, and was met with near universal acclaim, making it at the time the second best-selling game of 2002 (just behind Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, released earlier that month).

To date there are eleven Metroid titles spanning various incarnations of the Nintendo consoles, with a twelfth installment, Metroid: Other M, scheduled for an August 21, 2010 release date on the Nintendo Wii. Metroid: Other M will also be another first for the series as it has been confirmed that full on voice-acting will be used, with players finally hearing Samus herself speaking for the first time. While more details on the title are still sketchy, it’s hard not to admire a series that is still going strong years after it’s first incarnation.

Nice, btw, if you preorder Other M from Amazon, they will give you 20 bucks to spend on games you buy from them, so it’s like getting the game for 30 bucks.

  12. I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with the Earthbound series. I can do some research, but it will take some time to familiarize myself with the games themselves. Most of what I’ve written about comes from first-hand experiences.

But give me a few days and I’m sure I’ll come up with something on the subject.
